Ben was 35 years old and had been a lifeguard for over 15 years. It was a busy 4th of July weekend when he jumped off of the lifeguard boat into a big swell to help a distressed swimmer. The swimmer was saved but Ben had disappeared under the water and was later found a half mile away. Ben was the first and only Newport Beach Lifeguard to die in the line of duty since the service was formed in 1923. Ben was loved by all. Since his passing, a group of his family members, friends, and fellow lifeguards formed The Ben Carlson Memorial and Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation raises money for annual scholarships that help under-resourced kids and works to improve systems to protect lifeguards and the public from the ocean we all love.

The BENDIDGO paddle is a 30 mile open ocean prone paddle from Catalina to Newport Pier. I am honored to be participating in it for my second year. It is a fundraiser supporting the Ben Carlson Foundation! I’m passionate about this cause and need your help!
