In 1994, I finished my Master’s in Social Work degree and had my first “real job” interview at St. Vincent New Hope in Indianapolis, IN. I was excited and equally nervous. New Hope served individuals with disabilities, which included brain injury.  During the interview, I can remember being asked “What do you know about brain injury?” My response was, “Not a thing, but I’m willing to learn.”

Over twenty-five years later I remember the conversation like it was yesterday.  They picked up on my enthusiasm and offered me a job that opened my eyes and heart to the world of brain injury.  I had the great honor to help folks like Thom, Bethany, Jeremy, Anthony, and Greg, individuals who had a brain injury, move into their own supportive living homes.  The folks at St. Vincent New Hope taught me about the struggles, the dreams, and the “new hope” in life after brain injury. 

Over the years in my role as a social worker at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital and my current role as executive director at Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska, I have been blessed to continue to learn from the thousands of individuals with brain injury, and their families with whom I have worked.  I know the struggles are real but by working together we can help individuals with brain injury not lose sight of hopes and dreams that make life worth living.

This is where you come in.  We need your help.  This year our annual appeal goal is $20,000.  A lofty goal but one that I know we can reach when we all work together.  Your support, no matter the size, will help Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska continue to provide support through our Resource Facilitation program.  Our Resource Facilitation program has helped over 700 individuals with brain injury identify and access supports to build personalized teams to achieve individualized goals.
