I first saw the work of Bikes Not Bombs 35 years ago when we were working on a construction brigade in Managua, Nicaragua.
That first bike repair shop was located near the ruins of high rise buildings that were destroyed in the 1972 earthquake that devistated one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere.

Soon afterwards, BNB established it's headquarters in Boston, where it continues to ship used bikes and parts to needy countries in Central America and Africa. They provide youth training in bike repair and safety, promoting biking as a way of life in our city. There are several BNB locations around the country.
BNB has earn-a-bike programs for youth to learn bike repair and earn their own bikes.

15 years ago, when I started getting into road biking in earnest, the Bikes Not Bombs Bike-a-thon was my first group ride. 
This weekend, I'm joining Milton friends Robert and Juan on a 50-mile route.
