Ten years ago, we lost our daughter, Freya Irene, before we ever had the chance to meet her. In what felt like a whirlwind, we went from learning at 20 weeks that we were expecting a daughter to receiving the devastating diagnosis that our sweet little girl had a very severe congenital heart defect, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). At a time that should have been filled with excitement and planning for the arrival of our daughter, our days instead became filled with research, difficult conversations, and learning about complex heart surgeries and uncertain futures. We lost Freya a couple short weeks later. 

Over the years, running became one of the ways I processed that loss. This year, I’ve decided to do something with the miles. I’ll be running several races throughout the year, culminating in the Kiawah Island Marathon this December, while raising funds for congenital heart research through the Children’s Heart Foundation. Sharing Freya’s story and running in her memory is one small way I can help support research that will give more families hope and better outcomes in the future. Most of all, I run in memory of our sweet Freya Irene. I’ll be sharing updates along the way as I train and race in Freya’s honor. Thank you so much for your support!
