Sign-Up & Donor FAQ
How do I sign up?
You can sign up online by clicking "Register" in the upper navigation menu. You will also be able to sign up on-site, although signing up online will expedite the check-in process for all of us. Plus, if you register online and then raise $25 prior to the Friday before the walk, we will have an END THE SILENCE t-shirt in your size available at check-in! (T-shirts are not guaranteed to those who register on-site.)
I will be out of town on the day of the event, but can I still help raise money?
Yes! You can sign up to be a "Virtual Walker" and still provide your support without physically being at the event. Click "Register" in the upper navigation menu to start the registration process and make sure you choose "Virtual Walker." You will then have your own unique fundraising page to encourage your friends and family to donate!
I don't want to walk, but can I still make a contribution?
Yes! Just click the "Donate" button in the middle of the upper navigation menu. You can donate to an individual walker, a team, or the event in general.
What happens after I register online?
First of all, thank you for registering to walk with us! We're so glad that you're helping us End the Silence around suicide.
If you register to fundraise, you will be brought to your Fundraising Dashboard. This is the unique page created just for you! Edit your page by adding a little explanation behind the walk and tell people why you are choosing to participate in this event. Not only can you keep track of your online donors through this page, but you can also accept offline donations (like cash or checks) and enter them into your account to receive credit towards your Goal! You can also do things like register other walkers (like your partner or siblings), manage your personal Goal, invite friends and family to donate through e-mail or Facebook posts, or create or join a team of walkers!
If you choose to create or join a team, your team will also have a unique fundraising page which will be linked to each of the team members' personal page.
I joined a Team when I registered but I don't see my name on their Team Page! What happened?
If you join a team as a "Non-Fundraising Participant", your name will not be listed on their public fundraising page. You are still registered in our records as a Team Member for the event. If you would like to have your name on the Team's Fundraising page, contact us to change your registration type to "Fundraising Participant". We will create a personal fundraising page for you which will then be published on the Team Fundraising page.
What happens with the money raised from this event?
All funds go directly to the four local non-profits organizing this event: The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands, Cape & Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition, NAMI Cape Cod & The Islands and Sharing Kindness, Inc. Each of these organizations work in different ways to provide education and advocacy for suicide prevention. In other words, your money will have a direct local impact on Cape Cod and the Islands.
I received a donation in person! How can I get the money to you?
Congratulations! Please contact us to discuss the best way to get the money to us so that it can be officially documented on your fundraising page!
To whom should I write my personal check?
Please write all checks to Sharing Kindness, Inc., but include on the memo line that these funds are dedicated to the Cape and Islands Suicide Awareness Walk. That way, the funds will be appropriately distributed between the four local non-profits organizing this event.
Where and when is the walk taking place?
On Saturday, May 16, 2020, we will all meet at Veteren's Park Beach at 480 Ocean Street in Hyannis, MA 02601. Please arrive early if you would like to participate in our Restorative Yoga Class at 8am. Check in begins at 8.30 am and check in before the start of the walk at 10 am.

The route will take us in a three-mile loop around the town of Hyannis, starrting at Veteren's Park Beach at 480 Ocean Street in Hyannis, MA 02601 and continue on Gosnold Street. We will turn right on Sea Street then take a right onto Main Street followed by a right turn at the pocket park near the Barnstable Town Hall towards the intersection of Ocean and South Street. We will end with a final right turn onto Ocean Street to walk by the ferries and end back at Veteren's Park Beach.
Can I bring my dog to the walk this year?
While we have loved having our four-legged family join us in years past, the Town of Barnstable prohibits dogs within the Veteren's Park Beach.
Does it cost money to register?
No, it is free to register!
Do I have to raise money in order to walk?
No, you do not have to raise money to walk with us. Even though our main goal is to fundraise for Cape and Islands suicide education and prevention programs, it is more important to us to end the stigma around suicide by including anyone who wants to walk with us on May 16.
Who should register to walk?
Everyone who wants to walk with us - regardless of financial situations - must register!
Will there be refreshments and restrooms at the starting location?
Yes, there will be refreshments available for walkers and restrooms at the starting location and along the route.
Can I register on-site?
Yes, you can register on-site as early as 8.30am. If you are able to register online before hand, please do so in order to expedite the check-in process on the day of the walk.
I lost someone to suicide; how can I honor them at this event?
We are so sorry. Suicide sucks. And we understand. We would love for you to walk with us on May 16 in honor of your lost loved one. Please consider bringing a photo of your loved one to the walk for our photo gallery. The photo will be returned to you at the end of our event. If you register to fundraise online, please feel free to talk about your loved one on your fundraising page. You can also add someone's name to any donation that you give.
We are so glad you found our event and we hope that you'll reach out to us to share your story, if you are able. It's a terrible thing to have in common, but there is hope for all of us as suicide loss survivors - especially if we can talk about Ending the Silence together.
How can I learn more about suicide prevention?
Any of the four non-profit organizations behind this event - the Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands, the Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition, NAMI Cape Cod & The Islands and Sharing Kindness, Inc. - have resources available either online or in person. Please visit their websites through the icons on the bottom of this page. There will also be educational material available before and after the walk.
