Meet our Honorary Captain - Sofia

In January 2019, Sofia was diagnosed with leukemia. After 20 months of intense treatment, she rang the bell and was declared cancer free. But in 2022, the unthinkable happened—the cancer returned.

Sofia endured a two-month hospital stay at Albany Medical Center, followed by frequent multi-day inpatient visits. As doctors prepared her for a bone marrow transplant, Sofia returned for another long hospitalization. Her match? Her own sister.

Shortly after Christmas, Sofia and her mom traveled to Rochester, where she underwent a successful bone marrow transplant. Throughout it all, her family never left her side.

Building on Love was introduced to Sofia’s family by her Child Life Specialist, Mary Beth, who couldn’t say enough about Sofia’s joyful spirit and the strength of her incredible family. We were honored to provide support during their long and difficult journey.

On January 15, 2024, Sofia rang the bell again—cancer free—and has continued to receive positive news at each follow-up visit.

But Sofia’s story doesn’t stop there. Now a survivor and a giver, she has supported other families at Albany Medical Center Children’s Hospital by donating gift cards to help ease their burdens—just as others once did for her.

We are proud to welcome Sofia as an Honorary Captain and to celebrate her strength, resilience, and enormous heart.
