Meet our Honorary Captain - Hunter

Hunter was born on June 13, 2019, via scheduled C-section after a prenatal diagnosis of Campomelic Dysplasia at 31 weeks gestation. Campomelic Dysplasia is a rare and severe genetic disorder that affects the development of the airway, lungs, bones, and reproductive organs. It falls under a category of conditions known as osteochondrodysplasia, which are associated with various forms of short stature due to abnormal bone and cartilage growth.

After birth, he spent nearly three months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Albany Medical Center. During that time, a gastrostomy tube (G-tube) was placed, and he underwent a tracheostomy at just one month old. His early days were challenging, requiring close monitoring and adjustments to his ventilator settings before he could safely go home.

In late August 2019, three months after his birth, Hunter was discharged and reunited with his family. With support from Building on Love, his family was able to stay current on critical bills during this intense and uncertain time.

Hunter has surpassed statistical expectations and is celebrating his sixth birthday this year. He finds enjoyment in family and friend interactions, tablet play, and Blue's Clues. Hunter faces numerous challenges, but his enthusiasm for life remains untarnished. This remarkable young boy is truly exceptional.

His family remains in touch with Building on Love and looks forward to sharing his journey as a way to inspire others and advocate for children and families facing similar challenges.
