Meet our Honorary Captain Serenity

In June 2024, Iyanna received a frightening diagnosis: severe preeclampsia. She was forced to take unexpected medical leave and go on strict bed rest. With limited accrued time off at work, the sudden loss of income quickly became a serious concern for her family.

On August 1st, baby Serenity arrived several weeks early and was admitted to Albany Medical Center’s Neonatal Unit. For three weeks, she fought hard to grow stronger. Remarkably, she came off her feeding tubes and oxygen support much earlier than expected—and just in time to be home with her big brother, Shamere, before he headed back to school.

While Serenity’s health improved, Building on Love stepped in to help Iyanna’s family stay afloat by covering housing expenses during this critical time. Thanks to this support, Iyanna was able to focus on healing and caring for her newborn, without the crushing stress of falling behind on bills.

Serenity continues to do well, and her family is deeply grateful for the compassion and stability offered when they needed it most.
