Meet our Honorary Captain and Capital Cup for Kids Hall of Fame Member (2024) – Lyle Joiner

Lyle was born on August 9, 2013, at just 24 weeks and 6 days, weighing a tiny 1 pound, 12 ounces. His first 134 days were spent in the NICU at Albany Med, where his family faced some of the scariest moments of their lives. Doctors warned that Lyle might not survive his first surgery — but Lyle had other plans. A true fighter from day one, he pulled through, overcoming not just that first hurdle but four more major procedures, including heart surgery.

While Lyle was in the NICU, his parents stayed close thanks to Albany’s Ronald McDonald House. On December 19, 2013 — nearly a month past his original due date — Lyle finally went home. Since then, he’s faced continued challenges, including a rare chromosomal abnormality and a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

In 2018, Building on Love was honored to support Lyle’s family with a grant to help them keep their home during a tough time. His mom shared:
“Due to Lyle’s ongoing medical problems, we were grateful to receive the Building on Love grant in 2018 to keep our home. Lyle loves watching his Daddy play on his team and looks forward to seeing everyone at the rink!”

At the 2023 Capital Cup for Kids, Lyle discovered sled hockey through our amazing friends at Stride’s Capital District Sled Warriors. Inspired and determined, his team — the Zamboni Kids — rallied around him, securing the specialized equipment he needed to play. Lyle hasn’t stopped since, building strength and skills that took him all the way to the ice at the 2025 Empire State Winter Games.

In 2024, we were proud to induct Lyle into the Capital Cup for Kids Hall of Fame — a fitting tribute to this incredible young athlete and his remarkable family.
