Si conociste a Rafa Margarida Godoy sabes que este tipo era un buenazo. Practicaba el surfing, la vela, corría patineta, le gustaba el rock & roll, era un tipo sencillo. No se complicó mucho la vida por eso de dedicarse a los demás. En particular a su esposa, sus hijos, sus colegas en el trabajo, y amigos que cultivó  siempre. Ese era Rafa, ese era mi pai.

En Septiembre del 2022 le comenzaron unos sintomas de confusion. De momento se le dificultaba hacer hasta las tareas mas sencillas en el hogar. Se quedaba en la misma tarea como si solo supiera empezar sin saber terminar. Era como si un programa de computadora se quedo ejecutando el mismo comando infinitamente. Era tan obvio que algo estaba mal que decidimos ir a sala de emergencia para que lo internaran lo antes posible.

Dicen que la esperanza es lo ultimo que se pierde. Lamentablemente despues de una evaluacion rigurosa de mas de un mes mi padre fue diagnosticado con Creutzfeldt Jacobs Disease. Esta enfermedad no tiene cura. Es terminal. Tipicamente los pacientes duran no mas de un año excluyendo algunos casos extraordinarios. En los estados unidos anualmente acaba con la vida de 2 personas por cada 1 millon de personas. Osea que la probabilidad de que alguien le de esta enfermedad es un 0.0002%. Esto representa aproximadamente 500 personas anualmente. Cómo puede ser que algo con tan poca probabilidad de ocurrencia tenga tanto poder para destruir a una familia? 

Entre el hospital y el hospicio mi padre duro unos cuatro meses en la lucha mas grande de su vida. Falleció el 21 de enero del 2023.

Realmente para nosotros los Margarida De Guzman esto fue un periodo devastador, de mucho dolor y mucha tristeza, pero hemos decidido movilizarnos a darle frente a esta enfermedad y recaudar fondos para donar al CJD Foundation para aumentar la investigación científica a traves del:  In Memory of Rafael Margarida Research Grant.

Debido a la rareza de esta enfermedad no hay fondos suficiente para la investigación científica, para alcanzar la cura en un futuro cercano. Por eso estas donaciones tienen urgencia.  El In Memory of Rafael Margarida Research Grant se une al fondo general de la fundacion de CJD y unicamente usa los fondos al cumplir la meta de los $10,000.00. Luego, le otorgan los fondos a los investigadores con la meta de llegar un paso mas cerca  a encontrar la cura a esta enfermedad terminal.

Y es verdad lo que dicen. La esperanza es lo ultimo que se pierde por que no la hemos perdido. Sabemos que con esta contribucion vamos a poder dar nuestro grano de arena a la comunicad cientifica para quizas en algun futuro ayudar a otro que lo necesite. Y esa es la gran obra de Rafa.

If you met Rafa Margarida, you  know that he was a kind person, he surfed, skateboarded, loved rock and roll, he was a simple guy. He did not complicate his life because he focused on serving others, his family, his work colleges, his wife, his kids. That was Rafa, that was my "pai" (spanish slang for dad).  

In September of 2022 he began experiencing symptoms of confusion. All of a sudden it became extremely difficult for him to complete even the simplest tasks at home. He would remain in the same task for a while, as if he knew how to start, but not end it. It was as if a computer program keeps repeating the same command indefinitely. It was so obvious something was wrong, so we decided to rush to the emergency room so he could be seen as soon as possible. 

They say that hope is the last thing that is lost. Unfortunately, after a rigorous one month hospital evaluation, my dad was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt Jacobs Disease. This disease does not have a cure, it is terminal. Typically patients do not last more than one year, excluding a few extraordinary cases. In the United States this disease ends the lives of 2 people per one million annually. That means the probability  of someone contracting the CJD disease is 0.0002%. This represents aproximately 500 people annually. How is it possible that something with such little probability in occurrence can have such immense power in destroying a family? In between the hospital and the hospice care, my dad lasted four months in the hardest fight of his life. Rafa Margarida passed away on January 21st, 2023.

For the Margarida De Guzman family, this was a dark period filled with pain and sadness, but we have decided to create a research grant in honor of my dad Rafael Margarida, called the In Memory of Rafael Margarida Research Grant.

Due to the rarity of this disease there is not enough funding for researchers to find a cure in the near future, but that is why these donations are pivotal. The In Memory of Rafael Margarida Research Grant  goes directly to the general fund that the CJD Foundation has, which is only used once we reach the $10,000 goal. Then this fund is awarded to a researcher with the goal to get a step closer to finding a cure to this devastating disease.   

And it is true what they say, hope is the last thing that is lost, because we have not lost it. We know that with this contribution we will be able to add our grain of sand to the cientific communities research, so that it can help other families from not having to experience the devasting loss this disease causes. And that is Rafa's  life's great work.
