Hello! My name is Mallory Peters, and I'm 16 years old, from the Madison, Wisconsin area. Neuropathy, specifically CMT (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease), has deeply impacted my family. CMT is a genetic neurological disorder that affects peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness and wasting, especially in the legs and feet. CMT is caused by a genetic mutation that results in a gradual loss of sensation from the tips of the toes and fingers, spreading up the limbs over time. This affects balance and the ability to walk normally, and also the ability feel/hold things in the hands. Unfortunately, the loss of external sensation does not mean pain free. People with CMT suffer from terrible internal nerve pains and cramps in their legs and hands as well. 

I'm starting this fundraiser because I've seen my loved ones struggle with CMT, including my grandpa, uncle, and others. I've witnessed their physical challenges and excruciating pain at times.

As of now, there is no cure for CMT. This disease only affects 4 percent of the population. There is so much more research that needs to be done and I want to help make this possible. I am also aware that I have a 50% chance of developing CMT as I grow older, which is a very scary thing for me to think about.

So while I'm still young and healthy, I want to do whatever I can to help find a cure for this terrible disease. Since people with CMT have a lack of sensation on the external part of their feet, it is difficult for them to walk. So this summer (from June - September 1st) I will be walking as many miles (steps) as I can for them, to raise money to help further CMT research.
