While healthcare heroes take care of the sick, we homebound heroes can help the hungry.
How? By donating to our local food bank.
But we also need to ensure we stay healthy, stay active, and stay connected. So let’s train for and run a social-distance approved 5k on 5/2!
Only this 5k doesn’t require an entrance fee. Anyone can compete at no cost. However, we are encouraging all who participate to donate directly to the Second Harvest Food Bank of NW NC.
How much you donate is up to you. As for us, we’ll be donating the amount of money we’re saving in gas by working at home.
Here’s how the race itself works.
First, you create your own 3.1 mile course that starts at your home by utilizing a running watch or smartphone app.
Next, you get outside (or train on a treadmill or do some sort of exercise) to run or walk daily (or as often as you want). As you train, post your progress in our Facebook group or our Instagram page so we can all share one another’s triumphs (or struggles).
Then comes race day! On Saturday, May 2, 2020, the race begins at your home 9:00am (or whenever you want). We just ask that you follow three simple rules:
1. SINK START. Start your race at any sink in your house with 20 seconds of hand washing.
2. SELF-TIMED. Use your watch or app to time your race. If you can’t complete the distance all at once, just pause your timing device while you rest.
3. TP FINISH. Use toilet paper in some fun way to mark the finish line. Final note. Be sure to take pictures or videos of your start and finish and post them on one of our social media pages!
