I’m raising money for Degrees of Change, an organization that’s deeply personal to me and my hometown of Tacoma.

Degrees of Change was founded by my middle school math teacher with a simple but powerful idea: when students from a community are supported through college and into meaningful careers, they come back and help that community thrive.

A few years ago, I reconnected with the organization while looking for ways to give back. After volunteering and seeing the impact up close, I joined the Board in 2023 and now serve as Chair.

What stood out to me immediately was the caliber and drive of the students—and the way Degrees of Change supports them not just to get into college, but to graduate and launch careers through mentorship, scholarships, and internship opportunities.

I’ve also seen that impact firsthand at Symetra. We were the first company in King County to pilot the Seed Internship program—we started with 5 interns and have grown to 9 this year, with 2 former interns now working at Symetra full-time.

That’s what this work makes possible.

Right now, the organization is facing a critical moment. With shifts in funding, there’s a real need to ensure these programs continue for current and future students.

On April 22–23, we’re working to raise $250,000 through a virtual fundraiser to help close that gap.
