The UVA Department of Anesthesiology has a rich history of impactful clinician investigators who have served as leaders in the field of anesthesiology. FAER has helped support a number of UVA researchers since it began awarding grants in 1972. UVA investigators who have been supported by FAER over the years include: Lauren Dunn, MD, PhD (2021, Research in Education Grant), Julie Huffmyer, MD (2020, ABA-FAER Research in Education Grant), Zhiyi Zuo, MD, PhD (2000, New Investigator Award – Basic Science), Thomas Pajewski, MD, PhD (1996, New Investigator Award), Roger Johns, MD, PhD, MPH (1987, New Investigator Award), Carl Lynch, III, MD, PhD (1982, Research Starter Grant), Robert Bedford, MD (1979, Research Starter Grant), Thomas Gal, MD (1977, Research Starter Grant), Richard Wiklund, MD (1974, Research Starter Grant), and William Ross, MD (1973, Research Starter Grant). Additionally, FAER has supported a number of medical student fellowships for UVA students to conduct research at other institutions and for external medical student researchers to be hosted at UVA.

And, most importantly, to raise funds supporting the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) and its grantees, scholars, and fellows!

We all know the enormous value research provides to our field. And the importance of ensuring a strong pipeline of researchers ready to move anesthesiology and medicine forward. In pursuit of that goal, every year FAER awards over $2.5 million in grants and sponsors more than 100 student fellows and resident scholars!
