Why Am I Running in Support of IAR?
Over the years, I've volunteered in shelters with cats, dogs, and other animals, and fostered almost a dozen kittens. There are so many wonderful animals in desperate situations that need help—food, water, and a safe, warm bed. But it's not just about the basics—they need love, attention, and lots of care so they can heal from whatever they went through so they can find homes and thrive.
Being involved with animals in this way can be overwhelming and difficult at times. Many people say "How can you do it? I don't think I could." I get it. But I remember the volunteer coordinator where I first I started out asking us at the orientation, "If you don't, who will?" That really stuck with me.
The good thing is, there are so many ways to help. Join me for a 5K—or sit out the 5K and donate—to support IAR in helping these animals get the TLC they deserve. And check out the slides below for more of my story and more of my "why's"!
Meet Our Mascot!
Meet Grayjoy! This little fella was one of my first fosters years ago--I've fostered with a couple organizations. He started out shy and scared, but with lots of love and encouragement he became healthy and the boldest of the group. It's so rewarding to see them flourish! IAR and other rescue groups give these little ones a second chance.
The Day Violet Came Home
Almost 16 years ago now, I adopted Violet from a shelter. This photo is her first day at home with us. I remember the ride home with her like it was yesterday--she calmly rode in a cardboard carrier and listened as I talked and sang to her. When we got home and I sprang her loose, she explored a bit, then found "her" spot on the back of the sofa. She slept for hours, and I think that had to have been one of the most peaceful naps she had in her life up till then! Violet became one of the best friends I ever had, and she's still going strong. I'm grateful someone gave her the help she needed when she was tiny and homeless, so I could adopt her and give her a happy life!
Ruben!
When people ask if I am a cat or a dog person, I say "both!" I tend to work more with cats, but I love dogs too. A few year ago, I served as a dog walker and supported Ruben's IAR foster mom so he could get out during the day. Ruben is the handsome guy shown here. He eventually found a great home with another dog as a companion.
Christa and Bunny
Another of my previous fosters, Bunny. This little girl had a tiger-sized personality! She was so small and had a bad cold at first, but she was a fighter. With meds, care, and love, she recovered and it didn't take long for her to find a home.
This L'il Nugget Needs You!
Another little one that appreciated a bath and warm bed. These babies need a lot of care, and rescue groups are inundated with kittens each spring and summer.
