Why I'm Going Over the Edge for the Flynn

I am thrilled to go Over the Edge for Flynn and rappel nine stories down the side of the Courtyard Marriott on Saturday, August 31.

What excites me so much about this event is that it directly supports the Flynn’s efforts to nurture and expand the minds of so many of our community’s children. So many of us as adults have enjoyed an incredible show at the Flynn but many of us are simply unaware of the incredible work going on with the Student Matinee Series, FlynnArts classes and the Flynn Youth Theater Company which reach over 40,000 students, teachers and community members every year.

Over 1/3 of the Flynn’s annual $7.5 million budget goes to education every year and this has been a commitment of the Flynn's for almost 40 years. Our mantra at the Flynn is Everybody Belongs, and one of our flagship programs is our Student Matinee Series, through which 38,000 PreK-12 students from across 200 schools in Vermont attend student matinees at the Flynn every year. The tickets for this program are highly subsidized, at only $8.50 per student, and 8,000 students from districts who can’t afford to pay attend free of charge.

My love for the arts started when I was a small child. I was so fortunate to receive music lessons starting at age 4 and grow up attending performances with my parents at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ. These experiences literally changed the course of my life and created a spark and passion for the arts that has only grown and blossomed throughout my lifetime.

However, I’m very aware that not every child or family has equal access to the arts. At the Flynn, we believe that arts help build community and create a civil society, and should be made available to people of all ages, all backgrounds, and all walks of life. Each year, we offer over $40,000 of scholarships to children and adults for classes, camps and workshops in music, theater, dance, filmmaking, storytelling and more. We provide over $60,000 in tickets through our Community Tickets program to over 90 social service agencies and charities so that low income families, children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities, New Americans, as well as homeless and at-risk youth can all experience our MainStage and FlynnSpace performances.

In each of the past 4 years the Flynn has raised over $100,000 to support these critical programs.  Mike and I are so proud to go Over the Edge for the 2nd year in a row.

I would be so grateful if you would help me in my efforts to support the education programs at the Flynn by making a donation to my fundraising page. Our team goal is to raise $5,000, so please help us get there!

Thank you in advance for your support!

Warm regards,

Anna Marie Gewirtz

Student Matinee Series

  • A series of 30+ per year matinees serve approximately 38,000 children per year in grades PreK-12 from within a 120-mile radius.
  • Support of the matinees allows ticket prices to be at the lowest accessible access point and to offer free tickets to those students with high need. Last year, 7,100 students attended for free!
  • Support also allows the Flynn  to reach out to rural and underserved schools, providing tickets and bussing support, thereby equalizing access for students from communities that have fewer opportunities to experience the arts.

Flynn Youth Theater Company

  • Talented teens from across the state gather at the Flynn to produce high-quality theatrical productions under a professional team of artist-educators.
  • Over the course of several weeks, they build new skills, exercise their strengths, stretch their limits, and develop close friendships with peers who are passionate in similar ways!
  • Many graduates from the program have gone on to study in the top college, university, and conservatory theater programs around the country, and to pursue professional careers as performers.
