When Beth and I started working with Northern Illinois Food Bank a few years ago, “food insecurity” seemed like something that should be rare in a country with vast food resources. Since that time, we’ve met some of our neighbors served by the Food Bank and come to appreciate that most of us never realize how many people across Northern Illinois are going to bed hungry. Food insecurity touches people of all ages, education levels, and communities.
Through our involvement with the Food Bank, we see on a daily basis the enormous impact that the organization has on the communities it serves. In 2019, the Food Bank distributed over 69 million meals through a variety of well-established programs.
Critical to the Food Bank’s success and growth over the past 40 years, however, is its ability to adapt and innovate in order to expand access to healthy food to our neighbors. The Food Bank’s most recent pilot program, called My Pantry Express, is perhaps the most impressive yet; it uses technologically-driven solutions to break down barriers for people in need and is the first of its type in the nation.
Beth and I have been supporters of this initiative since it was first proposed and believe you’ll share our enthusiasm for the project. If you love it as much as we do, this is an opportunity to invest in this leading-edge strategy to strengthen our community and help families, veterans, seniors, and children in need.
Together, we can help those who need our support.
