Why I Walk

Join me in my commitment to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer's research, care and support. You can support my efforts by making a donation or joining my team and walking with me on October 21, 2023.

More than 6 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer's. Seventy-three percent are age 75 or older. About 1 in 9 people age 65 and older (10.7%) has Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's begins 20 years or more before memory loss and other symptoms develop. The time is now to act - let's support those who are already suffering and protect ourselves, our children and future generations from this devastating disease.

Alzheimer's disease has touched our family in more ways than one. It is a cruel disease and something no family should have to experience. As people are living longer and surviving other illnesses, Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia have become more prevalent. But there is hope. While we still do not have a cure for Alzheimer's, there are specific drugs being closely examined for effective treatment of early-stage Alzheimer's. This is why awareness and early and accurate diagnosis is so important. Do not ignore the signs! There are also multiple treatments targeting the underlying biology of Alzheimer’s in the research pipeline. And for those who have already began showing symptoms, non-drug treatments including physical activity, memory and orientation exercises, and music and art-based therapies are also showing to have a positive impact. It is never too late make changes and start protecting your brain.

I am more committed than ever to doing my part to raise funds for research, while also recognizing that the individuals and caregivers on this journey need our support. Funds raised from the walk benefit research efforts through the Goizueta Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at Emory University in Atlanta and local support services provided by Memory Matters Glynn, a local non-profit based right here in Brunswick.

Will you join me? Will you support me in walking in memory of my late grandmother, "Mema" Carolyn Haney and Tim's late grandmother "Millie" Mildred Hillmeyer and the millions of Americans facing this everyday? Will you help us support research to prevent and protect our children from every having to know the sadness and devastation that is dementia?

Thank you in advance for your love, participation and support in ending Alzheimer's disease.

See you October 21!
