The Problem:
Statistics about the problems facing children in Memphis can seem insurmountable: high ACE (adverse childhood experiences) scores, abject generational poverty, crime, unemployment, 40% of children under age 5 living in poverty and low childhood literacy rates.
The Approach:
Despite the multitude of challenges, Porter-Leath uses its over 170 years of experience to empower children and families to achieve a healthy, optimal and independent lifestyle. Porter-Leath staff members know that there is no quick and easy fix to the problems facing our city, but by employing best-practices, measuring our outcomes and refining our programs, we can make a difference in the lives of over 40,000 local children and families.
The Ways You Can Help:

Here are just a few ways that Porter-Leath is serving our community:

Connections provides individualized residential, and counseling services for the teens at Porter-Leath's 24/7/365 facility called Sarah's Place. The Connections staff are also working with the Department of Children's Services to ensure children have access to safe foster homes.
Cornerstone provides parents and children support and education through regular visits with parent educators. Their Parents As Teachers curriculum helps to build positive caregiver-child interaction and healthy child development.
Preschool teachers provide high-quality early childhood education for over 1,600 children. Family services staff are also available to help families map out attainable goals and meet emergency needs like food, diapers, and other community resources.
The Teacher Excellence Program provides professional development for early childhood educators through virtual seminars and in-person trainings.
The Early Success Coalition continues to partner with over 60 local and statewide agencies to connect early childhood resources and providers with parents. Its parent-focused website, parentplus901.com, helps parents decide what tools and resources may be available for their family.
NEXT Memphis is increasing the number of local, high-quality child care centers and family day homes by offering significant resources, training, and support to community child care providers.

Porter-Leath's Preschool Program builds kindergarten readiness skills for children 0-5. Through the provision of a high quality education, family support, and health & nutritional services, Preschool prepares children for a lifetime of learning success.
Porter-Leath's Books from Birth creates literacy connections for families, which inspire nurturing bonds between caregivers and children. As a result, these bonds yield lasting, positive results that extend beyond early childhood.
Porter-Leath's Cornerstone Program parent educators equip mothers with prenatal and postnatal tools to promote positive development, giving their children the best start in life. As pregnant and parenting families reach their potential, they promote stronger families in their own communities.
Porter-Leath's Connections Program provides individualized residential, placement and counseling services to meet the needs of troubled children. Through individualized service plans, staff continually evaluate the child's personal development progress, coordinate placement with caring foster parents, and provide families with specialized training to share a safe, loving and permanent home.
Porter-Leath's Generations Program builds relationships between children, adults and seniors who make a positive difference in each other's lives - encouraging healthy, productive and responsible communities.
Porter-Leath's Teacher Excellence Program professionalizes the work of early childhood education by strengthening the knowledge and classroom practices of early childhood teachers.
