For almost 13 years I have been the event coordinator of the annual J.K. Lee Board Break-a-thon. With this being the 25th anniversary of this event which has raised over $950,000 for childhood cancer research, J.K. Lee’s has a goal this year of collectively raising $50,000 for the MACC Fund which will take us to 1 MILLION dollars raised for local kids fighting a disease and battle they should never have to. If you are reading this ANY donation big or small will help and be greatly appreciated!

This cause is very important to me for a couple reasons. One of them being several of our young students have won the fight against childhood cancer with the lifesaving treatments they received and indomitable “warrior” spirits all our future Black Belts have. Treatments that were developed with funds we have contributed to.

Another personal reason I support this cause is my oldest daughter underwent open heart surgery at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin at the age of 3. The same hospital the MACC fund is located in. Without this surgery she would not have lived to the age of 5. Today she is 21 years old, an accomplished 2nd degree J.K. Lee Black Belt, and 1 year away from graduating from Nursing School at UWM. She has worked at Children’s Hospital as a CNA for the past 3 years, a lifelong dream she had so she could give back to the hospital that gave her a second chance life by helping and caring for others. This is the hospital that also saved my younger daughter from dying from sepsis, who is also a talented second degree Black Belt, and is currently working toward becming an Architect.

I tell my students that real super heroes save lives. That if one dollar they raised saves someone’s life it is the most important dollar of all and if everyone does a little, it equals a lot!

You can join us anytime at Southridge Mall in front of Macy’s between 10am-4pm Saturday February 16th. There will be hourly Martial Arts Demonstrations, students and instructors like myself who have raised money for the MACC fund breaking boards, and if you make a donation you can come break one too!
