Jen's Story
As many of you know, two years ago we were turned upside down when our “bump in the road” turned into Stage IV cancer almost overnight. Needless to say, we were shocked and scared. Through friends, we were linked to Hackers for Hope which in turn introduced us to our amazing care team at Memorial Sloan Kettering and ultimately to finding a treatment that has stabilized my cancer to a point that I feel great and am living my best life. I might not be here if not for this amazing organization and the research and connections it afforded us. We are so grateful to be able to participate in this year's Hackers for Hope fundraiser, the Final Hurrah! on October 15th. We'll be golfing to raise money for important cancer research. In 1988, Alfred Smith and Tim Brown founded Hackers for Hope while recovering from cancer. Their goal was to “give back” to the cancer research and treatment community that helped them and so many others. Over the years, Hackers For Hope has raised close to $17 million directly benefiting Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where I’m being treated and a few other top cancer research centers, For Dan and I, Hackers not only led us to Sloan Kettering within hours of my diagnosis but more importantly, Al Smith was an important sounding board for Dan as we started navigating our new world. Sadly, Al passed away in November 2019 and recently Al's co-founder, Tim Brown, lost his latest battle with cancer. Al’s wife Nan Smith made the decision to close Hackers For Hope after one final fall fundraiser called The Last Hurrah! to celebrate the accomplishments of the 33 years of Hackers For Hope and to honor the memory of Al and Tim
