ABOUT ME
I was 45 when I was diagnosed de novo with metastatic breast cancer, meaning it was already stage IV when it was found. My cancer is ER/PR-positive invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), and by diagnosis it had already spread diffusely throughout many of the bones in my torso, especially my spine, sternum and pelvis. I even had ribs fractured by the cancer.
I have a strong family history of breast cancer and began mammograms at 35. I also have dense breast tissue. Whether my cancer had been growing but was difficult to detect, or progressed rapidly, I may never know. Despite my family history, genetic testing has not identified an inherited mutation.
I also live with rheumatoid arthritis, so before diagnosis I blamed some of my pain on RA and even thought I had a subluxed rib. I never imagined cancer was spreading through my bones.
This August, I celebrated three years living with MBC. I am incredibly grateful for that time, but metastatic breast cancer still has no cure.
That is why #LightUpMBC matters so much to me. I want to educate people about MBC and invasive lobular carcinoma, be a voice for those living with this disease, and honor those we have lost.
My hope is that continued research brings better treatments, longer lives, and someday a future where no one dies from metastatic breast cancer.

WHAT IS #LightUpMBC ?

Held annually in October, the campaign partners with hundreds of iconic landmarks around the world to illuminate in the symbolic MBC awareness colors of green, teal, and pink. By uniting patients, families, and supporters, #LightUpMBC shines a spotlight on the urgent need for more research and resources to improve outcomes for MBC patients.
#LightUpMBC Live is a dynamic virtual event that serves as the centerpiece of the #LightUpMBC campaign, bringing together the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and its supporters for an evening of storytelling, inspiration, and impact. Hosted annually on October 13 on Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, this live-streamed program features powerful stories from MBC patients and their families, musical performances, and appearances by special guests who amplify the mission of raising awareness and funds for MBC research. #LightUpMBC Live provides a platform for education and advocacy, highlighting the urgency of funding scientific breakthroughs for the most advanced stage of breast cancer.
