October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month. In honor of our daughter Tinsley, who was stillborn in Dec 2017 due to an umbilical cord accident, I’m raising money to support SLF’s mission to prevent future stillbirths and support grieving families. 

26,000 babies are stillborn each year in the U.S. (10x the number of SIDS deaths), and many of these deaths are preventable.  The U.S. stillbirth rate has largely remained unchanged in the last few decades.   It’s complete BS. Let’s bring more babies home!

I am a member of the NY Metro Area Chapter and help run the Peer Companion Program. Through its national offices and our 20+ chapters across the U.S., we make an impact in a number of ways:

• Promote, support, and conduct research related to stillbirth and perinatal loss
• Conduct the collection of the world’s largest registry of pregnancy accessible to researchers who share our passion for the prevention of stillbirth and neonatal loss. (Pregnancy Research Project)
• Provide patient education materials to health care organizations and the public to help inform expectant families about any risk that exists and how to manage or reduce that risk
• Host Stillbirth Summits – multi-day conferences that bring together researchers, health professionals, bereaved families, and stillbirth advocates to learn about emerging evidence in stillbirth prevention and care and work together to support all efforts
• Provide family support materials and companion services to bereaved families
• Support and encourage legislation at state and federal levels that provide support for stillbirth prevention efforts and improve care of families experiencing perinatal loss
• Provide speakers to health care professionals, academic institutions, and public organizations to increase awareness of stillbirth issues, help disseminate current and emerging research, and enhance support for stillbirth families
• Host a nationwide telephone grief support line for bereaved parents and health professionals
• Provide online video support groups for:
  • bereaved parents
  • grandparents and extended families
  • couples experiencing pregnancies after loss
  • parents challenged by parenting living children after a loss.
  • fathers
  • coping with infant death
• Raise awareness of issues related to pregnancy and infant loss and stillbirth prevention
• Monthly newsletters, blog postings and podcasts to bring current and relevant information from the experts to our constituents.
