Why I'm Running the Boston Marathon for FriendshipWorks
As a qualified runner of the 2026 Boston Marathon, I am using my bib to raise funds for FriendshipWorks. I am deeply committed to ending social isolation among older adults and have made a lifelong commitment to inclusion and connection.
My journey with FriendshipWorks began in 2017 when I joined the Far-Sighted Committee—an initiative created to better support older adults with vision loss. From there, my involvement grew. I later served on an event planning committee, joined the Board of Directors, became Board President in 2020, and in May 2025, was honored to be selected as Executive Director.
That commitment is also personal. Diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease at age 11 and declared legally blind at 19, I have spent my life breaking down barriers and redefining what’s possible. As someone living with vision loss, I understand how disability can increase the risk of isolation—and the proactive steps required to prevent it. That perspective shapes both my leadership and my run this year.
Running has long been part of my story. I have completed 11 Boston Marathons and six 100-mile races, and I am an avid skier and advocate for inclusive outdoor recreation. Endurance sports have taught me resilience, teamwork, and trust—values that mirror FriendshipWorks’ mission.
Of course, I couldn't do this without my sighted guides who support me in running safely and confidently. A grateful shout out to Misty Pisani, FriendshipWorks’ newest board member, who will guide me for half the marathon this year. Misty’s connection to our mission dates back to 2010, when she first witnessed the impact our programs have on older adults. Today, she continues that commitment in her role as Director of Resident and Community Programs at Peabody Resident Services, an affiliate of Peabody Companies.
For the other half of the race, I’ll be joined by my good friend and longtime guide, Olivia.
Together, we’re running to ensure that older adults across Greater Boston experience connection, community, and belonging.
