I used to volunteer a lot in high school. It gave me a chance to meet so many people who had a heart for helping and giving. I made some great friendships in those volunteers and those that we were helping. Definitely a great way to get out of your comfort zone, and make a difference.
My Sophomore year I was the vice president and then president of a chapter called Best Buddies, helping mentally and physically challenged students. I was regular a volunteer and coach of Special Olympics, and along the way I met many deaf and hard of hearing students in and outside of those programs.
I eventually became fluent in American Sign Language and even became the interpreter for small groups. I've personally seen the impact Speech and Hearing services have on those who need it. They are more eager to communicate and experience social settings, and they have more confidence in themselves.
Between kids and my career, I haven't made volunteering a priority, and so I'm grateful for the chance to get back out there and be a part of this great group of volunteers who see the value in this organization and want to raise awareness, raise money, and have fun doing it.
Central Florida Speech and Hearing serves the community by helping provide meaningful services at a massive discount and the impact is nothing short of Life-Changing. But there is a financial gap between what they community is paying, and the actual cost to provide it. We can make a difference and help them close the gap.
I'm excited to compete in Mr Central Florida for a chance to win the competition and be the one who raises the most money : )
