Whether you live in Brooklyn, have lived in the borough, or have visited/currently visit my hometown, I need your support. Come out for our annual walk! Hi! I'm proud to be participating in ONE BK Unite to raise money for Brooklyn Community Services (BCS). BCS has been there for Brooklyn since the Civil War. Support from caring community members makes the work possible. Here's 10 reasons why I, and others, walk!
26.4% of youth and children in Brooklyn live below the federal poverty line.
Brooklyn has the most units of public housing in New York City.
Less than 5% of philanthropic dollars in New York City go to Brooklyn nonprofits.
Brooklyn ranks first in NYC in total number of children living in poverty.
At 16%, Brooklyn has the largest percentage of people with less than a high school education in New York City.
Studies find that children who participate in high-quality early childhood programs from birth to 5 have better long-term outcomes than children who do not have these experiences.
Students who are suspended or expelled are 3x more likely to enter the juvenile justice system the following year.
16 of 18 Brooklyn community districts are “moderate to high risk” neighborhoods for young people.
At least one in five adult New Yorkers is likely to experience a mental health disorder in any given year.
At any given time, over half a million adult New Yorkers are estimated to have depression, yet less than 40% report receiving care for it.
