Pedal For Palestine

Cycling for the People of Palestine

Bismillah! My name is Feras and I lead an Islamic faith-inspired cycling club here in Austin, Tx called the Lonestar Peace Riders and we are riding for the Palestinian cause.

We are a grassroots cycling movement focused on using cycling as a vehicle of change for the people of Palestine. We focus on 3 main goals:

1. Solidarity: Show our visible solidarity with our Palestinian brethren who are under a ruthless occupation and enduring an ongoing Genocide. We ride flying the Palestinian flag proudly and unapologetically. Palestinian flags, Kuffiyeh, and all symbols representing the people of Palestine are proudly worn/used during our rides.

2. Unity: Build unity in the communities as we ride through them. We typically ride Masjid to Masjid or kick off our rides from local Masajid.  Our rides are open to people of all backgrounds and faiths who recognize the Palestinian struggle for freedom. We aim to keep the Palestinian struggle for freedom alive in our collective hearts and actions. We also encourage local businesses, creators, influencers to support the cause.

3. Raise Funds: We ask our riders, supporters, allies, and masajid to donate to the Pedal for Palestine cause through city specific campaign URLs via Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA), a renowned US registered 501c(3), to raise much needed funds for emergency aid for the people of Palestine.

Our budding cycling club has been riding for causes impacting the Muslim ummah for the past couple years, Alhamdullilah. Since October, our rides have been fully focused on the Palestinian cause.

In Austin, we kicked off the first ride in early October 2023 and raised $6500, Alhamdullilah. Following this, we held a ride in Dallas in early November raising over $20,000, Alhamdullilah. The journey continues with the next planned rides being in Houston in January, and then Atlanta GA in April in shaa Allah. We focus on working with both muslim cycling groups and other cycling groups willing to ride with us for the Palestinian cause.

We plan to ride in every big metro across the United States, focused on the people of Palestine. Our next metros will in shaa Allah include: MiamiWashington DC, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Seattle and more!

Violence Escalates in Palestine

Violence has escalated after months of ongoing tension across the region. Over 32,000 people have been killed and thousands more have been injured or deemed missing. In Gaza specifically, a ‘total blockade’ is in place, completely cutting off the 2 million civilians from access to food, electricity, and fuel.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says at least 1 of 4 households are facing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity, the highest level of warning; the total number of housing units destroyed or damaged accounts for over 60% of all housing units in Gaza; and more than 90% of the population has been displaced with hundreds of thousands of people sleeping in the open with inadequate clothing to fight the cold.

The attack on the health system has been particularly devastating. The World Health Organization (WHO) says 15 out of 36 of Gaza’s hospitals are partially functional, facing challenges with the shortage of medical staff and lack of essential medical suppliesThey also shared that more people will die of disease if we’re not able to put the health system back together and provide people with the basics of life.

While issues related to the delivery of humanitarian aid persist, IRUSA partners are continuing to work on the following interventions:

  • Distribution of food parcels sourced by local farmers in Gaza to displaced families
  • Provision of hygiene kits to people in shelters
  • Provision of vital medical supplies to three hospitals including Hayfa Hospital, Al-Awda Hospital, and Al-Ahli Arab Hospital
  • Access to mobile clinics for 23,400 people in shelters
  • Immediate trauma response for 4,000-5,000 people
  • Winter aid including blankets, mattresses, and winter clothing

Our partners are also continuing to work on the procurement and stockpiling of water, food and non-food items, and medical supplies, to be delivered once a pathway for humanitarian aid is established.

$100 can provide essential food aid to a family

$250 helps build rehabilitation centers to serve children with disabilities

$500 can help provide medical assistance in Palestine
