Ending Preeclampsia with Your Help

On November 6, 2019, I went in for a routine prenatal visit. My blood pressure was high for the first time in my life - 150/100 - and my doctor was concerned. I came back in 5 hours later for a second blood pressure check and my blood pressure was still high. I was admitted to the hospital at 21 weeks 3 days and just 3 days later delivered. For our first pregnancy to end with such sadness was extremely unexpected. The only thing I knew about preeclampsia before this experience was that Lady Sybil died from it in Downton Abbey. Sadly, this isn't something that has been gone away with modern medicine and the advent of antibiotics - while preeclampsia and associated disorders was described by Hippocrates 2500 years ago, hundreds of women still die every year from preeclampsia, eclampsia, or HELLP. Over the last few months, I've been searching for what to do after this personal tragedy, and I've found my goals: be open about my experience, educate, and fund research. I am grateful for your donations and for your help in spreading the word about preeclampsia. If you're in the Madison area and free, let's walk together. If you want to talk about my experience, I am happy to share. I have hope for the future because groups like the Preeclampsia Foundation are doing research that will hopefully lead to my daughters and granddaughters not having to worry about having to deliver far too early to save their own life. Your support means so much.

Walk Info

Reminder - The Promise Walk is on Saturday!!! Make sure you snap a pic and take a short video of who you are and where you're walking. If you're a survivor of a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, wear a flower crown (or just a flower in your hair) as you walk. If you post on social media, tag your post with #teamswansonpromisewalk (yeah it's a mouthful!).

One of the great things about a virtual walk is that anyone can do it from anywhere - whether you're in Madison, Texas, or stuck abroad sheltering in place. I'm asking that everyone walk for at least 21 minutes - the gestational age I was at when I developed severe preeclampsia.
