Guyatu is a 15-year-old girl from Merti in Isiolo County. The only girl in her family, she lives with her mother and three siblings. In primary school, Guyatu often spent time at a friend’s home to complete her studies because her family did not have electricity. She used to fetch water from a seasonal river that frequently dried up, walking for over three hours, sometimes with donkeys. Along the way, she encountered hyenas and elephants that lived in a nearby forest. Her mother is a housewife, and her father is a porter who carries cargo from bus stations. Her home area is also marked by ongoing conflict between the Borana and Samburu communities.
Guyatu dreams of becoming a doctor and helping build hospitals to ensure healthier living for members of her community.
