Maureen is a 16-year-old girl from Meru County and comes from the Mbura clan of the Kikuyu tribe. She lives with her mom and 5 sisters in a rented timber house that leaks when it rains. Her dad is mentally ill and left home, and they don't know where he is. She says that she prays for him if he is still alive.

She attended a junior school twenty minutes from home, where she served as the environmental supervisor. In this role, she ensured the school was clean and that the environment was conducive to learning. Although Maureen sometimes had to work to help pay her school fees, she performed well in her national examinations. In her free time, she enjoys dancing and playing handball. She recalls that when she arrived at Daraja, she felt a sudden sense of happiness and knew her life was about to change.

Maureen dreams of becoming an agriculture teacher, a goal she has held since Grade 3. She also loves debating and believes that women are powerful when they believe in themselves.
