I'm racing for Saumu!

Saumu and I are racing 10 kilometers in support of girls' education. Any money we raise goes directly to Daraja Academy in Kenya and Saumu's education. Thank you for your help! Or, as they say in Kenya, ASANTE SANA!

Saumu's Story

Saumu is an 18-year-old girl from Kwale County in the coastal region of Kenya and will graduate from Daraja with the Class of 2028. She comes from the Duruma tribe and an extended family of 18 people. At home, she lives with her grandparents, uncle, aunt, sister, and other family members in a single house. Saumu walked five kilometers to school every day, which required her to wake up at 4:30 a.m. Her greatest challenges in primary school were finding school fees and enough food.

Despite these hardships, she remained committed to her education and is now grateful for the opportunity to attend Daraja. She served as a class prefect and loves playing volleyball. Saumu dreams of becoming a teacher because she believes it will allow her to make a meaningful impact in her community and give her the independence to make her own decisions.

She feels like the lucky one for joining Daraja, and the hugs she received upon arrival made her feel like crying because she saw love and support that she had never felt.
