In Swahili, Daraja means “bridge.” Daraja Academy provides a transformative, holistic secondary education for Kenyan girls who lack the financial resources to attend school - creating a bridge to empowerment, leadership, well-being, independence, and a lifetime of opportunity. Daraja provides a safe place for girls who would otherwise have no access to high school education.
“Education is the key to success and opens ways to a brighter future.” -Eunice
Eunice is a 17-year-old Maasai girl from a village called Musul in Laikipia County and will graduate from Daraja with the Class of 2028. She lives with her parents and five siblings in a small traditional mud house. Eunice attended a school located five kilometers from her home and had to wake up at 4:50 a.m. each day to arrive on time. In junior secondary school, she served as the deputy president and loved being a role model to the other students.
Although her mother never attended school and her father dropped out in Grade 7, Eunice is determined to work hard so her parents can enjoy the fruits of having an educated daughter. She believes challenges should never limit a person’s success and hopes to become a source of positive change in her family and community.
In her free time, Eunice loves playing football. She recalls feeling nervous during her first few minutes at Daraja, but soon became excited and felt as though she was at home. In the future, she hopes to return to her community to educate and empower other girls. Eunice dreams of becoming a science or agriculture teacher.
