I suggested that we call our team "Chunen Dachi",which means "Middle Aged Stance". It is no secret that the last few years have presented some physical challenges for me. At my very first appointment with my orthopedic surgeon he asked me, "Is Karate worth it?" I think I looked at him as if he wasn't speaking English. "Yes!" was alI I said. He scheduled me for an MRI that day.

Three and a half years and two shoulder surgeries later, I no longer turn onto my back when Sei Shihan says "Push up strong." I go down and up. Granted it isn't as far down as some folks, but it's a push up. I bear my weight and lower myself somewhat and then push myself back up. I can do a front fall. I can do a passable forward roll. I am lucky. I have had good health care and good physical therapy and good support throughout.  In addition, I have had this community which supported me all the way, providing meals and rides to therapy and endless encouragement. I had teachers who let me take class in an emobilizer and spar with one arm strapped inside my gi. No one ever suggested that I not come to class. No one ever expected that I could not come back. 

What a truly wonderful gift is the gift of expectation! When something is exected of you, you know that someone believes you can do it. I train and fundraise to support the community which has supported me so very well.
