My Story

Lindsey and I are once again preparing to plunge into the frigid waters of Lake Michigan in the annual Chicago Polar Plunge to raise money for Special Children's Charities. This year is the 20th Anniversary of the Chicago Polar Plunge, which supports the athletes of Special Olympics Chicago! The athletes of Special Olympics remind us of the power of the human spirit to dream, to strive, to persevere in the face of opposition, and ultimately to overcome. Special Olympics gives individuals with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to experience the transformative power of this journey through sport.

Lindsey and I participated in our first Polar Plunge last year and we dedicated our participation to Lindsey’s cousin Michael Thompson who was a past participant in Special Olympic events. Michael has been, and continues to be, an unwavering source of inspiration for our families. Among other things, Michael teaches us what it is to be loyal, to be passionate, to love deeply, and to be grateful. We are honored to renew this dedication for the 2020 event. Most will know that it is customary to wear a costume to the event; last year I went as the Incredible Hulk (thanks for the loaner costume @David Francis) and Lindsey joined forces with some of her girlfriends to ammase a pack of life-size plush unicorns. This year, I am turning over my costume selection to Michael who will enjoy the opportunity to decide my fate in this regard. Stay tuned for the decision!!!  Lindsey's costume to be revealed simultaneously.

Please help Lindsey and I raise money to support this great cause. Through your support, you are helping people with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to discover new strengths, abilities, and success. All funds raised will benefit the Special Olympics Chicago athletes, covering program costs such as transportation, sports equipment, team uniforms, and food. Please also leave a message about why you decided to donate – We’d love to hear from you!

With any luck it will be an average 37 degree day in Chicago on March 1st when we arrive on North Avenue Beach. A far cry from the 15 degree temps (below zero wind chill) we braved last year! They literally had to bring in a bulldozer to break the ice. I saw at least a dozen people bleeding from the face after jumping into the water not anticipating the softball sized chunks of ice awash in the water. Wish us luck and thanks in advance for your support.
