In memory of Grace Lui 10/12/2021

In honor of my mother Grace Lui.

Hello my mom Grace Lui had passed away last year from CJD. My father & I took mom to JFK hospital initially for what we thought was a stroke where she spent week getting tests but was discharged as her vitals where good and tests were inconclusive. After her spinal tap results came back from the Mayo Clinic, we learned she suffered non acquired sporadic CJD; terminal neurodegenerative brain disease. We tried rehab and speech therapy at first but then she got worse. We decided to do hospice care at her home where she died 2 months later on in a coma.

My mother loved to help others which she volunteered her time after retiring 36 years from Everest Re. She loved to spend time dancing with her social clubs, Edison Lions at senior centers, Metuchen library and nursing homes. She also taught Zumba online weekly and translated Chinese to students at her congregation. She will be missed by all of her friends, former coworkers and family. I am participating October 1st in Strides for CJD fundraiser walk in Morristown so can raise awareness and hopefully find a cure one day that no one or their family could suffer this terrible disease. I ask anyone to walk with me who knew her or just support this cause will be greatly appreciated.

About Strides for CJD

Strides for CJD is an annual walk/run to raise awareness of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), a rare neurodegenerative disease that has no treatment or cure. Through this event, anyone -- anywhere -- can pay tribute to their loved ones and raise funds for the CJD Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.

Funds raised support our programs including:

  • Our 24/7 helpline, support groups, conference, and other family programs throughout the year.
  • Research grants to help scientists make important discoveries and bring us closer to a cure.
  • Medical education to help raise awareness and understanding of prion disease.
