My first experience with CJD happened when I was 9 years old. One Thursday in October my healthy independent grandfather needed my mother to help him button his shirt. By the time the weekend game he needed help to stand-up and keep his balance. By Monday he was in the hospital and I never saw him again. For 6 months he was kept alive on machines while the doctors tried to figure out this mystery disease that was attacking his body. After he passed away, we learned it was CJD. Basically, his misfolded proteins (Prions) caused his normal proteins to misfold destroying his brain. Later in life I lost my Uncle Sibby and my cousin Frank to this horrific disease, unlike my grandfather, Sibby and Frank only survived 4-5 weeks after showing signs of their first symptom.

Imagine your loved one going to the doctor for muscle stiffness and finding out they have an incurable disease that will most likely take them from you within a month. It is unfathomable! That is why I fight; I fight to raise awareness of this horrific disease; I fight to support families caring for a patient with prion disease; I fight to make a difference in the battle against CJD; I fight to find a cure, but I cannot do it alone, I need your help.
