My First Swim: A Personal Journey to Support Women Facing Cancer
For many years, I've supported this incredible cause from the sidelines—donating to my sister Tamara and her partner Liz as they participated in the Swim A Mile | Move A Mile for Women with Cancer event. I've cheered them on as they've raised funds to help provide free programs, support, and resources to women navigating the challenges of cancer through the Women's Cancer Resource Center.
This year is different. This year, I'm jumping in—literally—to swim my mile for the very first time.
Last year, my dear sister Tamara was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. As a CT technologist, I see cancer patients every day. I help capture the images that guide their treatment, and I've witnessed the strength it takes to face this disease. But nothing prepares you for when it's your own family member fighting the battle. Watching Tamara go through this hits me in a way nothing else has. She's been so strong, so resilient, just as she's always been for others.
Tamara has been part of this event for years, swimming and fundraising to make a real difference for women from all walks of life who are dealing with cancer. Now, more than ever, I want to step up and do what I can to support her—and to honor all the women who are fighting, surviving, and thriving with the help of organizations like the WCRC.
I'm swimming this mile to raise funds for the Women's Cancer Resource Center's life-changing work: free support services, education, wellness programs, and community for women affected by cancer.
Every donation, no matter the size, makes a meaningful impact. If you've ever been touched by cancer—whether through a loved one, a friend, a patient, or your own journey—I hope you'll consider joining me in this effort.
Please donate what you can through this page. Together, we can help more women face cancer with the resources, strength, and hope they deserve.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Let's make waves for a cure and for every woman who needs support.
With gratitude, John
