Help Me Fight Adolescent Depression

Hi there! I'm Kevin. I first started struggling with my mental health when I was in my early teens; it started with a hatred for my body, and then moved to an unhealthy reliance on substances and finally severe mood instability. I was diagnosed with Bipolar I when I was 19, after several hospitalizations. In October, I’ll be running the 2023 Chicago Marathon to raise funds for Erika’s Lighthouse, a national nonprofit dedicated to making sure no young person feels alone in their depression. I’m always terrified to disclose my mental health journey in such a public way. So much of what makes mental health challenges so difficult is the loneliness that comes along with them. Anyone who has ever struggled with their mental health has likely tried to hide it, in fear of being judged or belittled or assumed to be less than. But what my life has taught me is that mental health is no different than physical health–it’s just as outside of our control as a physical disease. It just shows up a little more unattractively, a little more unsightly and unappealing–sometimes even offensively. But it shouldn’t matter–because no one deserves to be alone. So I choose to tell you this story in the hopes that someday a mental health diagnosis will receive the same support and empathy as a diabetes diagnosis, and the belief that it is somehow in our control will dissipate. It is through organizations like Erika’s Lighthouse that young teens struggling with depression find hope and support that could end up being the difference between dying at age 15 and dying at age 85. I am running to raise awareness for an issue that not only warrants it, but desperately, desperately needs it. I hope you’ll consider donating. With so much love, -Kevin

Erika's Lighthouse is determined to make sure no young person feels alone in their depression. We are dedicated to creating a community of empathy and education. We create middle school and high school teen depression awareness programs so educators and teens can create safe spaces to learn about depression, letting students know they are never alone, and there is somewhere to turn.
