Liam's Lions

Liam Lyons is a special boy, special because he has Absence Seizures. You may not notice it at first, you may notice his smile or contagious laugh, he might distract you with a funny story or facts about marine life. It is when he stares off into the distance and stops talking that you might notice he is having a seizure. They are not like those you see on TV where people fall to the ground and begin to convulse, yet they are no less scary for me, his mom.

Liam was diagnosed with Absence Seizures after a 5-day long hospitalization from Kawasaki Disease, a  serious illness characterized by inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body. It was after a series of EEGs, MRIs, and other tests that we were told he has absence seizure, a generalized onset seizure, which means it begins in both sides of the brain at the same time.

During a typical absence seizure, the person becomes blank and unresponsive for a few seconds. They may appear to be 'daydreaming'. The seizures may not be noticed because they are brief. The person may stop what they are doing, look blank and stare, or their eyelids might blink or flutter. They will not respond to what is happening around them. If they are walking they may carry on walking, but will not be aware of what they are doing.

Liam has multiple seizures a day making it hard for him to learn in class and it makes him sad and upset. He wants to stop feeling "stupid" in school.  This is why we are walking this October 3rd. For Liam and all the other kids like him with epilepsy. We are walking to end epilepsy for all the 1 in 26 people in our country who suffer from this condition, Please join us in our fight!
