23,000 steps for hope and wellness in honor of Justin
May is mental health awareness month and there has never been a more important time for us to understand ourselves and others in these trying times. The Coronavirus outbreak is leaving many people feeling anxious, angry, sad, or scared. People living with mental health conditions, their loved ones, and their caregivers face unique challenges during this public health crisis.
We all know someone - a family member, a friend, a co-worker who struggles with mental illness. I am blessed to have Justin in my life who faces this challenge every day. He is such a ray of sunshine – he has taught me that no path is a straight line from A to B. There are many twists and turns along the way and to embrace those – because they are always an adventure with him. When he sees me – he makes me feel like the most important person in the universe. His face lights up and he has the biggest smile and embraces me in nothing less than a huge bear hug. We have had many adventures together and will continue to have many more.
A gift from Justin - my travel mug I carry with pride. On it are his words …. “Because of you, I am a better me.” I tend to believe it is the other way around. He has taught me empathy, compassion, and patience.
My dear friends, his parents, Jenny and Joey, are an inspiration to all. They have raised Justin to be a kind, intelligent, thoughtful, independent young man. They are shining stars to me and all those they have helped with creating an awareness.
This Friday, May 22nd, I will walk 10 miles in honor of Justin who I could not be prouder of. I am hoping to raise $1,000.00 for NAMI. Please show your support by donating and/or posting words of encouragement.
Stepping towards hope and wellness.
