Remember that teacher or coach or librarian or principal who really did make a difference when you were in school? For me it was Ms. Near, senior level English. She loved books even more than I did and encouraged me to read everything I could, write in different styles and voices, rewrite and rewrite until it was the best it could be. My senior year she allowed a small group of us English nerds to produce a "literary magazine." Man, we were so cool....not! That little magazine was something we produced, we owned it, we were responsible for it and she expected it to be excellent. Lots of life lessons learned from her.
Ms. Near did not become wealthy teaching English; when I was in her classr she was well into her 60s with no plan to retire. I've often wondered what her later years were like. I hope that she had as much joy and as much fun as she gave to so many students in my high school. I hope she didn't spend too much of her own money on things for her classroom. I hope she knew how much she had enriched my life. I hope I remembered to tell her thank you when I was so busy being a literary star and enjoying my senior year!
So for me, supporting teachers financially seems like the right thing to do. I had great teachers growing up in Miami, Florida. My two children had great teachers growing up in Allen, Texas. If I can help a few more great teachers now, then that is my joy and pleasure because I believe nothing makes more of an impact on a child's success in school like the gift of a really good teacher. Paying it forward, happily!
