A MESSAGE FROM KATHY: It has been one year since I rescued Liko & Lava from the uncertain life of feral kittens, but I have been taking in strays since 1989. It all started with Hobbes, then Dude, TJ and the one and only Callie. The Durham Animal Protection Society has been helping animals in the Durham community for just over fifty years. During this past, uniquely challenging year, the APS of Durham has worked more resourcefully than ever. While continuing to care safely for the animals at the shelter, APS implemented an online signature program and conducted virtual adoption interviews until they reopened. They placed many animals in foster homes, and set up a pet food pantry for Durham citizens who need help keeping their pets at home. Throughout the pandemic, APS has continued to support Durham citizens who have to surrender their pets, assuring them that APS will do everything possible to find their beloved pets the right home. Callie, Liko and Lava, along with Durham APS, have reminded me this past year that animal welfare and human welfare are intertwined. As the saying goes, who rescued who?
