This will be my fifth year walking for South Minneapolis Meals on Wheels (SMMOW) on Thanksgiving morning. Our goal this year is to raise money for a "bridging fund." This fund would benefit clients like Maisy and Vern, a middle-aged couple with multiple medical problems that make it difficult for them to shop for groceries and prepare meals. Maisy and Vern qualify for a Hennepin County assistance program that pays for Meals on Wheels. Recently, their monthly paperwork didn't get processed in time, and the county stopped payment. Maisy and Vern cancelled meal delivery because they couldn't afford to pay $50 per week for meals for both of them. A bridging fund could have paid for their meals until their paperwork got straightened out.
