I will take the 100 Wave Challenge and do my best to catch 100 waves in ONE DAY to raise $1,000 + to sponsor 1 or more boys for a year with a remarkable organization called Boys to Men Mentoring. Last year WE sponsored 3 boys, you and I did. Can we sponsor 2 or more boys again? Sure can.  Boys to Men is a group mentoring program working with fatherless and high-risk teenage boys in 37 middle schools and high schools across San Diego County. I believe there are 17 more on the waiting list. BTM provides mentors to the boys in the program who often have no positive male role models – the men in their lives are in gangs, prison or have abandoned them in most cases. The money raised in this single event allows Boys to Men to provide trained mentors throughout the year and help make a difference in the lives of those who need them most. Sadly, nearly 80% of the boys in this program don’t have a father in their home.

So, what am I doing? I will be catching 100 waves in ONE DAY, which is the surfing equivalent of running a marathon, not easy at all. After 50 waves your exhausted but you go out again and grab ten more, then ten more…….

In 1996, Boys to Men Mentoring Network was founded by Herb Sigurdson (1927-1997), Joe Sigurdson and Craig McClain in La Mesa, California. Before Herb’s passing, he was a former Executive Director of Father Flanagan’s Boys Town and dedicated his life to building a better world.

Joe and Craig worked diligently to assemble a team of committed men and created a mentoring program that was meant to support the fatherless teenage boys in their community. They created a curriculum that incorporates holistic, intergenerational, and asset-based mentoring practices and encourages community involvement, intensive self-reflection, positive critical thinking habits, and self-accountability.

The curriculum is being replicated in various communities to empower young men around the world (United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa) that are autonomously governed and managed. In San Diego County alone, more than 12,000 boys and men have participated in the program from 1996-2019.

I have 1300+ FB friends. If every one of you were to donate $1 we could mentor two fatherless boys. $1.00 sure seems like small beans but for these boys it is the one heart enriching measure they deserve. $1.00?? Tip money? Couch money? Change jar money? A little single dollar, why not.
