Avery's Epilepsy Story
Avery was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2014 when she was 2 years old. She has a type of epilepsy called Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. It is a rare syndrome with hard to treat seizures. She has been through many medications over the years and had fought through many side effects. About 2 years ago, we decided to try the Low Glycemic Diet and we saw great results. She was able to wean off all 3 of her medications. We finally saw some big improvements in her development (though she is still severely developmentally delayed). She is talking in 2 to 3 word sentences, learning sight words & has even started to read! Her seizures have started to creep back in again and she experiences many types of seizures. Recently her seizures have been Tonic Clonic (or grand mal) seizures that happen when she is sleeping. We have had to give her rescue medicine a few times and we now take turns sleeping with her. We are starting on a new medication called Epidiolex. The FDA recently approved this drug which is cannabidiol (CBD-a chemical component of the Cannabis sativa plant). We are hopeful that with this, along with the diet, she can achieve a healthy balance of seizure control & minimal side effects.
Avery is a happy 6 year old girl who LOVES to watch the Ellen DeGeneres Show, she loves to go to school, go swimming, she love animals, music and most of all-spend time with family. Her laugh is the sweetest sound and can get us through the toughest of times.
