Thirteen years ago, I started a tradition that changed my life, born from a recovery goal and a promise to a friend. This year, I am proud to be lining up for my 14th Dempsey Challenge, taking on the 65-mile ride to continue a journey that began back in 2013.

The heart of why I ride hasn’t changed. It stays rooted in the memory of my friend, Brian LaFrance. When I first signed up, I was recovering from a major ski crash and knee surgery, setting a goal to ride 50 miles in honor of Brian as he fought leukemia. Brian was a Lewiston native who relied on the Dempsey Center during his battle. While he passed away just months before that first ride, his spirit has been my tailwind for every mile since.

The Dempsey Center provides a sanctuary for those navigating the "life-altering" reality of a cancer diagnosis. Whether it is a neighbor, a colleague, or a family member, cancer leaves no one untouched. The Dempsey Center steps in to offer physical, emotional, and social support to patients and their loved ones at absolutely no cost.

As I push through 65 miles this year, I do so to ensure these vital services remain available for the next person who needs them.
