Cancer touches everyone. In just the last year, patients, colleagues, friends and family have been affected. It seemed every life was touched by the threat or invaded, deteriorated, and even ended by cancer. Yet, just as nature stays in balance (homeostasis) so does life. Over the same time, I've witnessed so much love, beauty, caring concern, along with reunions and celebrations.

Memento Mori - at the moment - pause and reflect on these questions?

If one knew the day and hour of death, would you live differently? Why would this knowledge change anything? Why wait? One of the most mysterious thoughts we have is that we simply have more time, a predictable tomorrow - but is that true?

Living in the past, we can breathe warm memories or recognize the challenges we have overcome. Living in the future brings the excitement of anticipation but also the anxieties of uncertainty. Life lived in the present is to be treasured. Where else are memories recalled and shared, where else is a calm understanding of what is - recognized. This remains the only place for us to touch the lives of others.

I look forward to the Dempsey Challenge and the thought that these funds can make today better for those touched by cancer.

The Dempsey Challenge is the premiere fundraising event for the Dempsey Center, a nonprofit founded by actor Patrick Dempsey. The Dempsey Center makes life better for people impacted by cancer by easing the side effects of cancer by improving their physical, emotional, social, familial, and functional well-being at any point in their cancer journey--all at no cost.
