Thank you for visiting my personal fundraising page for this year's Dempsey Challenge!
In late August, I got the call no one expects - I had breast cancer. My experience was bittersweet. I knew how lucky I was: it was small, caught early, and treatable. All the “best case” things. I had surgery and radiation and suddenly found myself immersed in a world and community I never expected to be part of.
One of the places that became part of my journey was the Dempsey Center. When I first went for my intake and tour, I actually said, “Thank you so much - this is all so wonderful, but I’m not sick enough for this. I don’t want to take space from someone who needs it more than me.” I still had this idea that because my cancer was caught early, my experience somehow counted less. But the team immediately reassured me that their services are for everyone impacted by cancer, and welcomed me with kindness, compassion, and encouragement to use their support. It was a powerful reminder that every cancer experience is real, and everyone deserves care.
That experience changed something for me. The Dempsey Center gave me space to process everything and feel supported through something that was more emotional than I expected. Beyond the incredible free programs and services, I met so many wonderful people - staff, patients, and survivors - who just got it. Being part of that community reminded me that cancer affects so much more than physical health, and that support and connection matter.
I’m now cancer-free and incredibly grateful: for a routine mammogram, for sharp-eyed clinicians, for my medical team, and for the community that carried me through. This fundraiser feels especially meaningful because I know firsthand how much the Dempsey Center matters. I benefited from their care and programming, and I want others to have access to the same support when they need it most.
This summer, I’m participating to give back to a place that helped me during one of the most vulnerable times in my life. If you’re able, I’d be so grateful for your support of the Dempsey Center and the incredible work they do for individuals and families impacted by cancer.
