The Dempsey Challenge is the premiere fundraising event for the Dempsey Center, a nonprofit founded by actor Patrick Dempsey. The Dempsey Center makes life better for people impacted by cancer by easing the side effects of cancer by improving their physical, emotional, social, familial, and functional well-being at any point in their cancer journey--all at no cost.

This year, I am walking in honor of my dear friend, Kim Charland.
One of my many "adopted children," I first came to know Kim when she was a middle schooler and the best friend of my goddaughter, Meaghan. She was an absolute delight as a teenager, and her openness, kindness, humor, and ability to make anyone feel special only grew stronger with each passing year.
In late 2019, Kim began experiencing severe back pain. A conscientious and proactive patient, she sought medical care and did everything she was supposed to do: diagnostic testing, physical therapy, muscle relaxants, and countless follow-up appointments. Yet nothing brought relief.
After nearly six months, more extensive testing revealed the devastating diagnosis: Stage IV breast cancer that had metastasized to her bones. The news came shortly after she had received a clean mammogram, making the diagnosis all the more shocking.
Kim fought courageously for nearly six years. Through it all, she remained positive, spreading joy and lifting up everyone around her even while facing her own challenges. She worked as long as she was able, treasured every moment with her family and friends, especially her beloved nieces and nephews, and devoted countless hours to supporting the Dempsey Center and its mission.

On March 22, 2026, Kim was finally freed from her pain and, I believe, found the eternal peace and rest she so deeply deserved.

Kim's strength, grace, and unwavering kindness continue to inspire all who knew and loved her. This year, I walk to honor her life, her courage, and the extraordinary impact she had on so many people. I invite you to join me in honoring her.
