I'm honoured to lead Animal Justice, the country's only national animal law organization. For me and the rest of our brilliant team, creating a better country for animals is a driving force. If you're reading this, you probably share this value. I'm inspired every single day by the thousands of compassionate Canadians doing their part to end animal suffering.

The truth is, the animals desperately need our help. Canadians call ourselves animals lovers, yet our laws are among the worst in the western world. Our national animal cruelty laws are stuck in the last century, and special interest groups like farmers and hunters have defeated better laws every single time we try to get them changed. The federal government doesn't even bother to regulate animal welfare on Canadian farms—there are no legal requirements for space, veterinary care, or enrichment for the 800 million land animals killed every year in this country.

That's why our team of lawyers works to hard to make change. We want Canada to do better, and we have a plan to usher in strong new animal protection laws, vigorous enforcement, and a country where animals have a voice in our legal and political systems.

On October 10, I'm going silent to help raise funds to support our vital work.

This won't be easy, but it's nothing compared to what animals go through. It's nothing compared to the torment that Lucy the elephant must feel, kept all by herself at the Edmonton Zoo without any other elephants to communicate with. It's nothing compared to what a cow feels when her newborn calf is ripped away from her and sent to a veal farm, her milk diverted to the dairy industry.

It's the least we can do for the millions of animals whose voices are silenced by the industries that abuse them, and the political forces that ignore their suffering.
